Scout InsurTech Spotlight with Kelly Maheu

Kelly Maheu is the VP, Partnerships and Industry Relations at Vertafore, an insurance software solutions/services for carriers, agencies, MGAs and independent agents. Kelly was interviewed by Chris Luiz, CEO and Co-Founder at Scout InsurTech.

Kelly, what are the key challenges the industry faces in attracting and retaining new talent, and how can companies address these issues effectively?

“The insurance industry faces an ongoing challenge in attracting and retaining new talent, particularly as a significant portion of the workforce is set to retire in the next few years. Filling this gap requires not only recruiting new professionals but also changing perceptions about what a career in insurance can offer.

One of the biggest hurdles is the industry’s reputation. Insurance is often seen as dull and uninspiring, sometimes even referred to as the ‘boring uncle’ of the financial services sector. This perception makes it difficult to attract young professionals who seek dynamic, engaging careers. To address this, the industry must highlight its diversity and the wide range of opportunities available. Personal stories from industry professionals can help break the misconception that careers in insurance are uninspiring. Most people don’t plan to work in insurance, yet many who find their way into the field stay for decades because of the meaningful work and growth opportunities it offers.

Companies need to showcase the variety of roles in the industry, from underwriting and claims to data analytics, technology and product innovation. Demonstrating the impact of insurance—helping businesses recover from losses, supporting families in times of need and driving technological advancements—can help shift perceptions. It’s also essential to focus on diversity and inclusion, ensuring that new professionals see representation in leadership and across different roles.

Attracting talent isn’t just about bringing in new graduates. Professionals from other industries, those with non-traditional educational backgrounds and individuals with transferable skills can also bring tremendous value. Companies must create pathways for these professionals to transition into the industry. Additionally, highlighting the role of technology in insurance is key. Many don’t realize how much tech and data science influence the industry. Without innovation, insurance cannot continue to evolve, and it needs professionals with a passion for technology to drive that progress.”

How do mentorship and networking contribute to career success in the insurance industry, and what advice would you give to those seeking or providing these opportunities?

“Mentorship plays a vital role in professional growth at every stage of a career. Whether someone is just starting out, in a mid-career transition or nearing retirement, learning from others with different experiences and perspectives is invaluable. If a company offers a mentorship program, professionals should take full advantage of it, and if one doesn’t exist, they should consider working with HR or leadership to establish one. Whether formal or informal, mentorship helps foster career development and provides guidance, encouragement and support.

Networking is equally important, though it doesn’t always come easily. Early in a career, it can be intimidating to introduce oneself to industry leaders or attend professional events. Many professionals, especially introverts, have to develop their networking skills over time. Making the effort, even when it feels uncomfortable, is crucial. Attending industry conferences, engaging with speakers and participating in networking sessions can lead to unexpected opportunities. Simply sitting with new people at an event, asking thoughtful questions or reaching out via LinkedIn can make a lasting impact.

Not every attempt at networking will be met with enthusiasm, but there are always professionals who are eager to help and welcome new talent into the industry. The relationships built early in a career can provide long-term benefits, offering guidance, support and even new job opportunities down the line.”

What are some innovative ways the insurance industry can improve its visibility in branding to appeal to younger generations and professionals outside of the field?

“To attract younger generations and professionals from outside the field, the insurance industry must actively promote its technological advancements. Many people outside of the industry don’t realize how much innovation is happening in insurance. Technology is reshaping everything from risk assessment and claims processing to customer experience and data analytics. Younger professionals, especially those with tech skills, need to see the career potential in insurance.

It’s also important to combat the negative narratives that often surround the industry. Insurance is frequently in the news for the wrong reasons, whether it's insurers dropping policyholders or claims disputes. While the industry has room for improvement, there are countless stories of insurance professionals making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Sharing these positive stories can help shift public perception and attract professionals who want to do work that has a tangible impact.

Younger workers also place a high value on mentorship, flexibility, creativity and purpose-driven careers. More than ever, they are seeking jobs that allow them to give back and contribute to society. It’s crucial for the industry to showcase how insurance aligns with these values. Companies need to rethink how they present themselves, using modern branding strategies, digital engagement and social media to connect with younger audiences in an authentic way.”

What resources, tools or programs have you found most effective in helping new professionals navigate the complexities of the insurance industry?

“For those entering the insurance industry, a range of resources can help them navigate its complexities. Programs like the Invest Program, run by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (Big ‘I’), focus on educating and attracting diverse talent. Companies like Vertafore support these initiatives, recognizing the importance of preparing new professionals for insurance careers.

There’s no shortage of educational opportunities, whether through industry training, certifications or designations from organizations like The Institutes or the Risk and Insurance Education Alliance. Professionals looking to develop specialized skills can benefit from these programs.

Additionally, industry technology user groups such as those run by NetVU - The Network of Vertafore Users - are available to share knowledge and experience with new users and experienced professionals alike. Industry-specific resources such as Vertafore’s ReferenceConnect provide access to aggregated policy coverage and risk information, helping professionals build their knowledge base.

Keeping up with industry news is another key to success. Reading trade publications and staying informed about major developments ensures that professionals are knowledgeable about the field and can anticipate changes that may impact their work. And, of course, mentorship remains one of the most effective ways to learn and grow. Those who have been in the industry for a while are often eager to support new professionals and help them succeed.”

Someone is interested in entering the insurance industry, what first steps would you recommend they take to build a successful career?

“For anyone considering a career in insurance, the first step is understanding the vast array of opportunities available. Many assume insurance is only about selling policies, but in reality, the industry encompasses roles in marketing, legal, operations, HR, technology and more. Preconceived notions about insurance should not deter anyone from exploring the possibilities.

Being open-minded is essential. Saying yes to new opportunities, even when they seem unfamiliar or uncomfortable, can lead to growth. Attending industry events, reaching out to experienced professionals and participating in training programs can provide valuable insights and connections. Continuous learning is key—insurance is an ever-evolving field, and staying curious and engaged is crucial to long-term success.

While some may initially question whether insurance is the right fit, many professionals ultimately find a niche where they thrive. The industry offers stability, career progression and meaningful work, and for those who take the time to explore its opportunities, it can be an incredibly rewarding path.”
